Home and School Links (Home and School Association)

Establishing and maintaining close links between home and school is desirable. We are fortunate at Helmsley to have a ‘Friends of Helmsley Primary School Group’ and parents are automatically members. You are welcome to any of the meetings, which are held regularly throughout the year. The aims of the group are to strengthen home/school links through fund-raising, social and educational activities. If you would like any further details about the group and/or forthcoming events, please contact the school office.

Parents are welcome as helpers in school, and many already assist with reading, educational visits and art and craft projects.  If you are interested, please let us know!


Information about your child

The school holds assessment details on each child, including copies of their annual reports, internal and statutory test results.  Parents wishing to view their child’s records are welcome to do so, all we ask is prior notice so we can have the file ready for you.  (Some data is held electronically under the data protection act)

We often wish to include photographs of children in the school web site, newsletter and local media publications.  A form will be given to all new entrants asking for permission to include the child.  No images will be used that specifically identify individual children in line with school policy.


School Classification

The school is a Community Primary and Nursery School, accepting boys and girls the term after their third birthday up to the age of eleven years. (Please refer to the admissions policy later in this document.)


Building and Facilities

The school is of a modern, single-story construction and was opened in 1979. It is built of local stone, with a pan tile roof, to be in keeping with Helmsley’s traditional buildings.

The school premises consist of six classrooms, which have their own art and craft areas, and adjoining breakout rooms.

A large hall is utilised for various purposes: assemblies, physical education, drama, serving meals, etc.

School meals are cooked in the modern kitchen adjoining the hall and provide a cooked main meal and a vegetarian option each day. They are served on a cafeteria-style basis.

The school is surrounded by well maintained gardens, grassed areas and play areas. A large playing field is available for games and other recreational activities. A programme to develop the school grounds for pupil recreation has provided us with an adventure trail and log cabin climbing frame, in addition to a variety of games marked out on the playgrounds. 

A Health and Safety check is done annually. 

A Fire Regulations inspection is carried out annually.

The Fire Alarms and general school alarms are regularly tested by qualified inspectors.

Risk assessments are carried out and reviewed annually.


Extra Curricular Activities

At Helmsley School, we are able to offer a wide range of clubs and activities to suit all tastes. Clubs are open to both Key Stages One and Two where appropriate, enabling clubs to be a reasonable size for the activities involved. Examples of after-school clubs that have operated are football, netball, art and craft, chess and board games, drama, dance, ICT, yoga, rounders, cricket, gymnastics, judo etc.

N.B.  different clubs operate at different times of the year, but children and parents are notified of the clubs that are running each term. Parental consent forms must be completed and returned to school, otherwise children are unable to attend a club.

The school welcomes parental involvement in clubs, and would ask that volunteers make themselves known! More recently parents/volunteers have run a tennis club.



Children are often asked to take work home in the evening, and we would be grateful if parents would make some time for them to do so. In Key Stage One, this work most likely involves reading and reading activities. In Key Stage Two, there is an expectation that children will take their reading book home, that they will learn their number bonds' and times tables each week, and complete any written work or research task given by the teacher. We believe that homework is most valuable when it supports classroom work, in order to perhaps consolidate or extend an idea or concept.  

Alongside their weekly maths and English homework children are given a Homework menu sheet termly which informs parents of any homework tasks linked to their topic along with hand-in dates etc.
